Rothy has made a sweet summery comeback with her fourth digital single ‘Ocean View’, which features a verse from (my #1 guy) Chanyeol from EXO.
For those of you who don’t know Rothy, she is a solo singer who made her debut in 2018 under Dorothy Company. Since her debut she has released two mini albums and four digital singles, including this one. As well as this, she has sung on many drama OSTs, including on ‘A little bit more (조금만 더)‘ with Jinho from Pentagon, which is from the drama ‘What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?’.
Rothy brings her sweet angelic vocals to this mid-tempo summery track to create a relaxed, chilled and easy-listening vibe. Her gentle tone sweeps us along with her as she tells a story through her lyrics. Chanyeol’s verse adds colour to the overall song, offering a contrast against Rothy’s parts to bring depth and difference in rhythm pattern to the verse. His mature sound brings texture to the song and gives us more scope to appreciate the softness in Rothy’s vocals.
My overarching thought on the MV is that the concept is truly hilarious! I was not expecting to be so entertained by it since it started out to be your typical aesthetically pleasing female solo MV. However, as Chanyeol’s verse begins, the storyline begins to unfold and it made me laugh more than I thought this MV would. Check it out even for that – it’s super amusing.
Rothy is a pretty underrated vocalist at this point. Even though she is working extremely hard with her numerous OST credits, it is often hard to be recognised as an artist outright outside of the OST world. So, by Dorothy Company managing to secure Chanyeol to feature on this track with her, it will hopefully do wonders in getting her name out there and encourage EXO-L’s (the EXO fandom) who are finding Rothy for the first time to listen to the other songs that she has to offer. (Time for me to proudly say that I’m so glad Chanyeol has been collaborating with lesser known artists in recent times, helping to elevate their profile – he is an angel).
