EVERGLOW are back on the scene with second mini album ‘-77.82X-78.29’ (how do you even say the name of this album?), making another strong statement with retro vibe track ‘LA DI DA’.
It is sometimes hard for me to comprehend that EVERGLOW are still a rookie group, with only four title tracks under their belt, because to me, each track is so memorable, impactful and polished enough to belong to that of a senior group. ‘LA DI DA’ is no different, putting another high energy track into their pockets, whilst bringing a brighter overall sound than preceding track ‘DUN DUN‘.
‘LA DI DA’ adopts the uptempo power pop/synth-pop sound of the 80’s to catapult the popular genre of the past into the modern age. Although ‘retro’ is very on-trend at the moment, the energetic synth-pop route isn’t always everyone’s choice and actually was utilised more at the start of this year. Despite this, it is a timeless sound and ‘LA DI DA’ wins me over on multiple counts because of its upbeat nature and nostalgia trip. Opting for this sound allows the girls to try a much more lively sound and dig their way out of the EDM/trap hole that they were beginning to to fall into. This is a direction that really works well for them. They bring a fun, eclectic vibe to the song whilst still maintaining the edgy EVERGLOW persona.
Girl groups seem to be in love with the dum-di-dun’s and la-di-da’s and I just personally find it so amusing that EVERGLOW chose both two consecutive times, with ‘LA DI DA’ following ‘DUN DUN’. But it has worked in their favour, creating simple and memorable hooks to sing along to. No need for complicated lyrics when you’re building an intentionally addictive track. Although I haven’t found ‘LA DI DA’ to be as instantly gripping as ‘DUN DUN’, this song is the exact style that I love. Both the song and the associated concept for the MV suit the group and it’s nice to see them switch up their sound whilst still staying true to their identity.
