CHUNG HA – Dream Of You (with R3HAB)

This year has seen award winning artist Chungha come back more frequently, releasing single after single throughout the year. This is all in the build up to the release of her first full album, which is set to be released at the start of 2021. Hot off the heels of her signing with 88rising, Chungha has released brand new single ‘Dream Of You’ which sees her work together in collaboration with Dutch DJ and producer, R3HAB.

By taking on a more frequent approach to music releases, Chungha has managed to explore a whole host of different styles and genres over the past year. She has been able to provide fans with continuous music throughout the year, whilst displaying her breadth of skills and capabilities in a multitude of forms. This seems to have worked out really well for her this year, delivering music that feels new but still hits that Chungha standard every single time. ‘Dream Of You’ is no different when it comes to venturing into fresh territory, leaping into more of an electro house feel with the help of producer R3HAB.

‘Dream Of You’ is a mid-tempo KPop track, which embodies key house elements such as groovy synth accompaniment, prominent bass segments and edgy distorted sounds. The overall sound is funky, energetic and full of dance vibes – a concept which matches Chungha so well. The production of the track balances the groove of the instrumental with sufficient empty space so that Chungha’s clear and affecting vocals can ring out throughout the track. She rides the melody through the choruses, but carries the rest of the song with such effortless energy. This song doesn’t call for her to belt out power notes like we all know she is capable of, but allows her to deliver her vocals with polished clarity from start to finish.

I am low key obsessed with this song. Although electro house and dancefloor vibes are not new to KPop, this feels rather refreshing amongst the current landscape, especially with a lot of groups opting for throwback vibes. ‘Dream Of You’ holds exactly the right level of funk to meet my needs and is definitely a song I would find myself dancing along to all night. Even though the track is completely in English, it feels genuine, and I barely even notice that it is not in Korean (sometimes I find English releases to be a little too safe, or the lyrics a little too odd). This track just gets me hyped up for the upcoming album, and has me prepared for the Chungha buzz to come.

P.S. I don’t think I will ever hate a Chungha song – without even trying, I have ended up loving her so much.
